Finally, gilding can begin. Wooden components have been gessoed and are being water gilded. Some metal components are also gessoed and water gilded, some painted and oil gilded, some with a combination of both techniques.

 

Water gilding components

After gesso, clay (bole) is applied as a base for the gilding.

Gilded elements will receive touch up and a coat of shellac.

The curved arms are gessoed and water gilded on the brass arm; the white metal section is painted to simulate bole, then oil gilded.
